Galgotias University's Robodog Controversy: Professor Neha Singh's Perspective (2026)

The Robot Dog Debate: A Matter of Perspective and Misinterpretation

The recent controversy surrounding the origin of a robot dog displayed at the Galgotias University stall at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 has sparked a heated debate. Professor Neha Singh, who initially claimed the robot was developed by the university's Centre of Excellence, has now acknowledged that her remarks were not clearly articulated and expressed regret over how they were interpreted.

In an exclusive interview with Hindustan Times, Singh clarified that the robot dog, named "Orion," was procured as part of the university's AI investments and meant as a hands-on learning platform for students - not as an in-house invention. She emphasized that the university cannot claim ownership of something not curated by its students, aligning with its academic values and transparency.

The controversy began when a short video clip showed Singh describing the robodog as having been developed by the university's Centre of Excellence. However, online users identified the machine as a quadruped robot made by Chinese firm Unitree Robotics. Singh explained that when she used the word "developed," she was referring to how students would study, experiment on, and build further innovations using such technologies.

Despite the initial backlash, Singh maintained that the university would have clarified the situation regardless. She described the episode as a matter of interpretation, stating, "You’re maintaining your six, somebody else’s nine — that’s what happened."

The robot dog has been moved back to the university labs for academic use, according to Singh. She urged attention toward student-built AI applications also being showcased at the pavilion, emphasizing the university's commitment to transparency and academic integrity.
