Toews, a veteran of 37 years, admitted to feeling uncertain about his emotions during the video tribute, a heartfelt acknowledgment of his return. The video montage, played during the first TV timeout, left him breathless, with the crowd's applause and cheers echoing through the arena.
"Welcome Back 19" signs adorned the stands, and some fans even threw hats onto the ice, a gesture of appreciation and respect.
This was Toews' first appearance at the United Center since his final game with the Blackhawks in April 2023. The Blackhawks' decision not to re-sign him at the end of the 2022-23 season, after a challenging period limited to 124 games due to health issues, including Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome and the lingering effects of long COVID-19, made this return all the more poignant.
