The Algarve's Stunning Beaches Transformed by Unrelenting Storms
The Algarve's picturesque beaches, once a haven for sun-seekers, have been ravaged by relentless storms and turbulent seas. The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) is closely monitoring the damage, with several beaches now unrecognizable.
Peneco Beach in Albufeira and Quarteira have been particularly affected, with the powerful waves pushing the shoreline inland. Drone footage reveals the extent of the destruction, showing wooden boardwalks destroyed and beaches all but 'disappearing'. A section of the pavement and road near Quarteira beach has also collapsed, highlighting the force of nature.
Despite a coastal sand replenishment intervention approved in January, covering the stretch from Quarteira beach to Vale do Garrão, the work is now delayed until April. This intervention was planned before the latest storms, but the damage is already evident.
Albufeira's iconic Peneco beach is also in distress, with the sea removing so much sand that it's barely habitable. Emergency measures are underway, and the area may be temporarily restricted. Faro beach is not spared either, with waves overtopping and carving slopes up to two meters high.
The full extent of the damage remains unknown, as authorities must wait for the ground to dry before assessing the risks. Controlled rockfalls are expected to start in Portimão in the coming weeks, according to SIC Notícias, further emphasizing the ongoing challenges.
The Algarve's beaches, once a major attraction, now face an uncertain future as nature's fury continues to take its toll.
