In a shocking move that has left the F1 world reeling, Red Bull has sacked one of its most successful team bosses, Christian Horner, sparking intense debate and speculation about the future of the team. Mintzlaff, speaking to Dutch publication De Telegraaf, emphasized that the move was not taken lightly. He stated, “We knew we had to do something. I’m not someone who fires people just for the sake of it. Christian has an incredible track record, leading Red Bull to six constructors’ titles and eight drivers’ championships—four each for Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen—since 2005. His contributions are deeply appreciated by everyone here.” Yet, he added, “You can’t keep relying on past successes. It was time to turn the page and start a new chapter.”
And this is the part most people miss: Horner’s departure came at a pivotal moment for Red Bull. Despite a slow start to the 2025 season, with Verstappen securing only two wins before the change, the team experienced a remarkable turnaround. Verstappen went on to win six of the final nine rounds, narrowly missing the championship by just two points to McLaren’s Lando Norris. This raises the question: could Red Bull have clinched the title if Horner had been replaced earlier? Helmut Marko, whose own departure from Red Bull was recently announced, certainly thinks so. In a recent interview, Marko claimed that Verstappen would have beaten Norris had Horner been sacked sooner, adding that “those last few years with Horner were not pleasant.”
Mintzlaff, however, distanced himself from Marko’s comments, stating, “Those words are Helmut’s responsibility. I can’t say anything negative about Christian. He’s meant a lot to Red Bull.” He also highlighted the natural evolution of organizations, noting, “Perhaps Dr. Marko has also changed over the years. It’s normal for things to shift over time.”
The decision to replace Horner with Racing Bulls boss Laurent Mekies as chief executive and team principal was not without its challenges. Mintzlaff acknowledged, “It wasn’t an easy decision, but we didn’t rush into it either. Sometimes, you just need a change to shake things up.”
