APD officers to get pension credit for prior service with other police departments
In a significant development for law enforcement personnel, the Allentown City Council has unanimously approved an amendment to the pension and retirement ordinance. This amendment grants police officers pension credit for their prior service with other police departments, a move that aligns with Act 49 of 2024. The legislation, as explained by Managing Director Frank Kane, allows officers to purchase five years of pension time from their previous employment, but not healthcare benefits. This incentive is designed to encourage seasoned officers to join and bolster the police force, addressing the current shortage of around 300 officers.
Councilmember Candida Affa, who has firsthand experience riding along with police officers, emphasized the importance of this initiative. She highlighted the need for more officers and the positive impact of their presence on the community. Affa's perspective underscores the value of experienced officers in enhancing public safety and addressing the current staffing gap.
The administration's initiative has already garnered interest, with approximately 10 officers expressing interest in the new benefit. This development marks a proactive step towards improving the police force's strength and ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
